Russian Navy will Launch a new submarine kalina
various candidates for a new generation of conventional submarines will be equipped with a fifth Russian modern AIP system ( advanced ) class name with the appointment of Kalina , a naval commander said on Wednesday .
" Russia is currently designing a fifth -generation conventional submarines dubbed Project Kalina , and will be equipped with idependent Water Propulsion ( AIP ) , " said Admiral Viktor CHirkov .
" Our industry has promised to develop a system of AIP in 2017 and build the first submarine equipped with such a system in 2018 , " said CHirkov .
Admiral previously said that the new AIP system can be tested at the start of operation of diesel - electric submarines in service with the Lada class navy , St Petersburg , which is undergoing sea trials in the Barents Sea after a series of design changes .
Air - independent power plants offer significant advantages over diesel - electric submarines that must appear on a regular basis to recharge their batteries as well as nuclear submarines, which have to be constantly running pump to cool the reactor with noise .
Submarine with a system like this can still dive for weeks at a time and are already operating with a number of navies around the world .
United States has so far not using these technologies , however, support the length and durability of their nuclear submarines cruising .
